The Tinora Rams needed a win in front of the home crowd Friday Night at Justin F. Coressel Stadium to clinch the GMC Championship on Senior Night.
What the home fans saw was a night of memories: the Rams defense’s fourth shutout of the season, a GMC championship, and the breaking of a 27-year-old defensive record.
The first quarter saw the Edgerton Bulldog offense control the ball for most of the quarter. The Rams’ first possession resulted in a turnover deep in their territory, as the Edgerton defense recovered a Rams fumble at the 30-yard line. The Tinora defense held, with the Bulldogs missing a 49-yard field goal attempt.
Tinora opened the second quarter with a 2-yard touchdown from Devon Luellen. Jacob Bishop’s XP gave the Rams a 7-0 lead with 11:55 left in the second quarter.
After each team traded possessions in the quarter, the Rams took over after a Trenton Delarber 15-yard punt return to the 50-yard line with 6:03 in the half.
Owen Ferrell then drove the Rams deep into Edgerton territory, resulting in a first and goal for the Tinora offense at the Edgerton 2-yard line. Dominic Graziani would take a direct snap in for a 2-yard touchdown and a 13-0 lead. The Bishop XP would push the Rams lead to 14-0 with 1:19 on the second quarter clock.
Without starting running back Joel Walkup, the Bulldog offense would try to move down the field before the half. After each team burned a timeout, the Bulldogs were forced to punt, facing a 4th and 13 from their 22-yard line with 25 seconds on the halftime clock. As Edgerton punter Kellen Sanchez was about to punt the ball away, Tinora’s Jacob Bishop would come in from the side and block the punt, teammate Alex Homier would scoop up the ball and race in from 2 yards out for a Rams touchdown and a 20-0 lead. The Bishop XP would give the Rams a 21-0 halftime lead.
The story of the second half was Tinora’s Alex Homier. The senior defensive end came into the game with 14 sacks, just 2.5 sacks shy of tying the season record of Marcus Mosier with 16, and 2.5 sacks breaking the team record of Tinora head coach Eric Becker’s 22.5 sacks.
After registering a first-half sack and his second sack in the middle of the third quarter, Homier sacked Edgerton’s Maddox Baker with 3:05 left in the third quarter. The Homier sack set a season and career record for the Tinora football program. What a fantastic accomplishment.
The only scoring in the second half came from the right foot of Tinora’s Jacob Bishop as he would split the uprights on a 36-yard field god with 8:36 on the third quarter clock, giving the Rams a 24-0 lead at the time.
Neither team would put together any drives in the fourth quarter to get into scoring position.
Tinora returned with a 24-0 win and the 2024 Green Meadows Conference Championship; congratulations to the Rams.
