On a chilly but sunny Saturday morning, the Tinora Rams (10-2), winners of six straight, hosted the Kalida Wildcats. Kalida (9-5) entered as the #6 team in the most recent weekly PBR poll. (poll below)
Tinora started the scoring in the first inning, scratching across a single run off Kalida starter Jaxon Huffman. Ryan Mills would reach on a fielder’s choice, steal second base, and score the first run of the contest on an errant throw on a steal of third as the throw from the catcher would sail into left field, for a 1-0 Tinora lead.
Kalida would knot the game at 1-1 with a single run in the top of the second. Huffman would draw a one-out walk. Caden Looser would follow with another walk against Tinora starter Owen Reynolds. Back-to-back wild pitches from Reynolds would plate the first run for Kalida, scoring Huffman from third.
The visiting Wildcats grabbed a 2-1 lead with a single run in the top of the third. Nathan Kahle started the frame with a walk, moved to second on a sac bunt from Logan Kesner, and would score on an infield throwing error from the Rams’ infield.
Both starters, Huffman and Reynolds, didn’t allow a hit through four innings. The Rams finally got their first hit off Huffman in the bottom of the fifth and added three runs to take a 4-2 lead.
Tinora’s Avery Moser drew a one-out walk to start the big inning. Logan Stein would collect the first hit for either team with a single to left. Ryan Mills would follow with a walk, loading the bases for the Rams with one out. Owen Reynolds would collect an RBI with a fielder’s choice, tying the game at 2-2. Parker Hancock would reach on an error by the Wildcats outfield, allowing both Mills and Reynolds to score for a 4-2 Tinora lead through five innings.
Both starters, Kalkida’s Jaxon Huffman, and Tinora’s Owen Reynolds were removed after five innings of work. Reynolds did not allow a hit, and Huffman allowed just one hit.
Kalida would send Zach Unverferth to the Hill in the sixth.
Kalida inched closer with another single run in the top of the sixth off Tinor’s Parker Hancock, who was making his first appearance on the hill in 2026. Griffin Klausing worked a one-out walk, followed by a hit by pitch to Adam Bockrath. Both runners would move up on a passed ball. Huffman would pick up an RBI on an infield groundout, cutting the Tinora lead to 4-3 after six innings.
Kalida’s Gavin Leis started the top of the seventh with a leadoff single off Tinora’s Owen Ferrell. Ferrell came on to start the frame, looking for his third save in 2026. Leis advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Zach Unverferth. Nathan Kahle was hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and second with one out. Logan Kerner followed with an RBI single, plating Leis to tie the game at 4-4. Ferrell got the final two outs to send the game into extra innings.
The game would remain tied at 4-4 until the top of the ninth. With both teams getting itchy over the imminent proms at both schools that evening, the Wildcats punched across two runs to take a 6-4 lead.
After the first Wildcat batter was retired, Logan Kerner would single and steal second base. Kerner would score on an RBI single from Griffin Klausing to break the tie, and Kalida grabbed a 5-4 lead. Adam Bochrath would single off Ferrell, and an error by the Rams outfield would allow runners to advance to second and third.
With two outs, Tinora would send Allan Burchfield to the hill to try to limit the Wildcats’ scoring. With Kalida’s Klausing at third, and Buckrath at second, Burchfield would unleach his initial pitch to the baskstop, allowing Klausing to score. A throwing error on the same play would send Bockrath to the plate, but second baseman Ryan Mills retrieved the ball on the infield, throwing out Klausing at the plate to end the top of the ninth. Kalida took a 6-4 lead to the bottom of the night.
Working his third inning of relief, Kalida’s Zack Unverferth would allow just one baserunner, Jared Neff, who reached via a hit by pitch. Unverferth would pick up the win, improving to 3-1 on the season.
Kalida improved to 10-5. The Wildcats will host Pandora-Gilboa in PCL action on Tuesday.
The Rams drop to 10-3-1. Tinora will travel to Paulding in a GMC makeup game on Tuesday.
