HOLGATE: A driving layup with just four seconds remaining by Tiger senior Robbie Thacker sent the Holgate Tigers past the Tinora Rams, 45-43, on a Saturday night at the Tiger’s Den at Holgate High School.
Despite trailing for a majority of the game, the Tigers of Holgate rallied to defeat the Rams on the Thacker runner, and for the second straight year, Thacker’s hot hand defeated the Rams.
This is the first season these two teams have met in the regular season as non conference opponents, outside a few meetings at the DC Holiday tourney over the years. Holgate became a member of the BBC, the Buckeye Border Conference, with the start of the 2021 school year, leaving the GMC at the end of last season after four decades of play.
The last second basket by Thacker overshadowed a career game from Tinora senior Lance Rinkel. Rinkel led all scorers with 18 points, with three made 3 pointers.
On the bench for Holgate as an assistant was former Rams head coach, Paul Wayne. Coach Paul Wayne, a Hall of Fame inductee in 2015, has 539 wins overall in his 41 years, 43-68 at Tinora in his 5 years at the helm. Wayne with 396 wins @ Holgate with 1 championship in 2004. He also was the Ohio 2001 coach of the year.
Last season, in the final GMC basketball contest between the two schools, the Tinora Rams were defeated by the Holgate Tigers, 43-34. Robbie Thacker set a career high 28 for the Tigers.
