In a matchup of great pitchers, Wayne Trace’s Brody Rossworm outdueled Tinora’s Logan Stein as the Raiders grabbed a huge Green Meadows matchup, 2-0 at Grube Field.
Despite a 45-minute delay in the middle of the first inning due to lightning and showers, both starters remained in the game.
Wayne Trace grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on an unearned run. The Raiders Carter Clemens singled to start the inning. Clemens moved to second on a passed ball, moved to third on an infield groundout, and then scored the first run of the game on a Rams wild pitch.
Wayne Trace added a second run in the top of the sixth. Brody Rossworm started the frame with a single, moved to second on a Tanner Laukhuf sacrifice bunt. Rossworm scored on an RBI double off the bat by Caden Sinn to take a 2-0 lead.
Rossworm would go the distance for his third win, striking out six, allowing just five hits.
The Rams had several of their own chances. Tinora got a leadoff single from Owen Ferrell to start the fourth. What seemed from afar to be a misunderstanding between Tinora hitter Owen Reynolds, the home plate umpire, and Ferrell resulted in Ferrell being picked off first base. Assuming Reynolds asked for time, it was not granted, but Ferrell assumed time was called, was caught off first base.
The Rams had a chance to tie the game in the fifth. With the Raiders leading 1-0, Kolton Snyder led off with a double to centerfield. Snyder moved to second on a sac bunt by Stein. After a strikeout by Rossworm, Avery Moser sent a towering infield pop to second base, and Wayne Trace’s Tanner Laukhuf lost the ball in the sun. Shortstop Carter Clemens came from his position and came in for a sliding catch, taking a gametying hit away from Moser and the Rams.
Wayne Trace improves to 6-4, 3-0 in the GMC. The Raiders will host Van Wert on Monday.
Tinora falls to 4-1-1, 0-1 in the conference. The Rams will travel to Findlay on Saturday for a 1 pm start.
