MONTPELIER – After an inauspicious start that saw the first three Montpelier Locomotive batters reach, Tinora Rams junior right-hander starter Mason McQuillin settled in and dominated the rest of the game.
McQuillin started the game by hitting Montpelier’s Griffin Cooley, Cooley then stole second, went to third on a single by Wesley Hartsock. Cooley would score the first and only run of the game by the Locos on a single by Landon Fackler as the Locos grabbed an early 1-0 lead after the initial inning.
The visiting Rams collected their first hit in the top of the third inning off starter Hayden Sharps as Tinora senior Connor Wolfrum started the inning with a leadoff single. Wolfrum would move to second on a single by Trenton Delarber.
After a bunt single by leadoff hitter Ayden Moser loaded the bases with no one out, Kadyn Radzik would pick up an RBI on a fielders choice, the Rams knotted the game at 1-1 with just one out. Alec Schaublin would get an RBI on a sacrifice fly, scoring Delarber from third to give the Rams a 2-1 lead into the third inning.
Montpelier’s Sharps was able to work out of the jam, allowing just two runs.
The Rams pushed across two more runs in the top of the fourth to grab a 4-1 lead. Mason McQuillin would start the Tinora inning with a leadoff single. McQuillin would advance to second as BJ Morlock would draw a walk. McQuillin and Morlock would move up on a bunt single by freshman Owen Ferrell. Connor Wolfrum would be hit by a pitch by Sharpe to load the bases with no one out.
Tinora’s McQuillin would score on a passed ball to increase the Rams lead to 3-1. BJ Morlock would add the fourth run of the game, the second of the inning, on an error by the Locos with two out in the fourth.
Tinora added a single run in the top of the fifth as Alec Schaublin would single, then score on an error by the pitcher to give the Rams a 5-1 lead after five.
The top of the sixth saw the Rams add another single run on a Schaublin RBI single that plated Delarber to give the Rams a 6-1 lead through six.
Tinora scored the final run of the game in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Ayden Moser, who collected three hits, scoring again was Trenton Delarber who scored three runs on the night.
McQuillin would shut down the Locos in the seventh, preserving the Tinora 7-1 win. McQuillin would pick up his second win of the season as he would work all seven innings, allowing just the one run, while striking out 11 batters, walking just one.
Tinora improves to 9-4 and will travel to Ayersville to take on the Pilots in a GMC contest Tuesday.
Montpelier drops to 5-6 and will host Holgate Tuesday.
