Senior Rams hurler Connor Wolfrum picked up his first win of the season with 4 1/3 solid innings of work. Teammate Parker Hancock came in and pitched 2 2/3 innings of near perfect relief while picking up the save in the Rams 5-2 win Saturday at Grube Field.
The Cadets had a couple chances to jump out to an early lead over the first two innings, however two base running errors by Cadets runners, and two fantastic plays by Tinora infielders, thwarted both Hilltop scoring changes.
With the game scoreless, the Tinora bats came out in the bottom of the second as they pushed cross three runs to take a 3-0 lead.
Connor Wolfrum would help himself with a leadoff walk to start the second off Hilltop starter Devin Dempsey, then BJ Morlock would follow with a single. Wolfrum would score the game’s first run on a Mason McQuillin fielders choice. Morlock would later score on a wild pitch by Hilltop starter Devin Dempsey, Tinora lead 2-0.
The third run of the inning would come on a Kadyn Radzik BRI single, scoring Ayden Moser who previously walked and stole a base.
The Cadets would bounce right back, scoring two runs in the top of the third to cut the Tinora lead to just one, 3-2.
Jacob Haskill would work a leadoff walk, and after Wolfrum would retire the next two Cadets, Devin Dempsey would walk, putting two Cadets on the bases. Cam Schlosser would get an RBI on an infield singe, scoring Haskill for Hilltop’s first run.
The Cadets would make it 3-2 as Terry Rebeck’s single would push across fellow Cadet Dein Dempsey. Cam Schlosser, the tying run, was thrown out by Kadyn Radzik at third base to end the third inning.
Tinora would add a single run in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 4-2 lead. Trenton Delarber would start the inning with a walk and come around to score on an Alec Schaublin single to right off Hilltop relief pitcher Reece Haynes.
After pitching 4 1/3 inning of solid work, Connor Wolfrum was lifted as the Cadets put two runners on in the top of the fifth with just one out. Rams headman Brent Renollet summoned sophomore Parker Hancock to the mound.
Hancock got a dribbler back to the mound for the second out, and followed that up with a strikeout with Cadet runners at second and third. Hancock kept the Tinora lead intact through fie innings, 4-2.
The Rams added another single tally in the bottom of the sixth to increase their lead to 5-2. Parker Hancock would start the bottom half of the inning with a line-drive single to center. Hancock would move to second on a wild pitch by Haynes.
On a bizarre play, BJ Morlock would bunt Hancock over to third base, but the throw was a bit high, causing the runner, the fielder, and the ball all to arrive at basically the same time at first base. Cadet first baseman Terry Rebeck had the ball knocked from his glove, the umpire ruled Morlock out at first, but Hancock would score on the play as the ball rolled slightly away from Rebeck at first.
Hancock would close out the Cadets over the final two innings, striking out 4 of 6 Hilltop batters, picking up his first save as a varsity player.
