SHERWOOD: A jammed-packed crowd saw the host Apaches rally from a nine-point second-quarter deficit, including a 21-point final quarter, for a thrilling 54-44 Green Meadows Conference win over their rival, the Tinora Rams.
The visiting Rams jumped out to a 14-11 first-quarter lead, as Josh Lieb scored five points for Tinora.
The Rams lead grew to as many as eight in the middle of the second quarter, 23-14, after a bucket by Grant Lymanstall. The Apache defense forced two Tinora turnovers in the final 90 seconds, including a steal and dunk by Logan Mosier, igniting the home crowd, cutting the Rams’ lead to 23-18 at the half.
The third quarter would again see coach Panico and his Apaches turn up the heat on defense, forcing three straight Tinora turnovers, butting the Rams lead to 23-22 early in the third. Owen Ferrell, however, would nail a deep three, increasing the Tinora lead back to seven, 29-22, with 4:30 in the third stanza.
Fairview’s Brody Williams hit a three to bring the Apaches to within one, 31-30, with just under two minutes in the third. After a Grant Lymanstall three-pointer increased the Rams’ lead to 34-30, Jonah Shinninger’s three-pointer cut the Tinora lead to 34-33 at the end of the third.
Brody Williams steal and score gave the Apaches their first lead of the contest to start the finals period, 35-34. Logan Olinger’s driving layup increased the Fairview lead to 47-39 with 3:22 remaining.
Tinora’s Dylan Schaufele did all he could to keep the Rams in the game, as he threw in nine fourth-quarter points, on his way to a career high 16 points.
Despite the effort by Schaufele and his teammates, the Apache defense was just too much, as the Apaches outscored Tinora 21-10 in the final quarter and went on to a 54-44 win.
Logan Olinger pumped in nine fourth-quarter points for the victorious Apaches.
The loss damages the Rams chances of defending their conference title from a season ago.
