Fairview vs Tinora, any sport, any venue, any time, it’s a battle from start to finish.
A great crowd at Tinora High School’s Grube Field saw the 4-2 Rams welcome the #11 team in DIV V, the 8-2 Fairview Apaches. The Rams came in with a 0-1 GMC mark, losing 2-0 a week ago to Wayne Trace, while the Apaches entered at 3-0 in conference play.
Coach Eric Tipton sent his sothpaw ace to the hill, Logan Stein, 2-1 on the season, while longtime Fairview Coach Andy Singer sent Elijah Arend, 3-0, to the bump.
Fairview threatened in the first, with runners on first and second, but Rams catcher Doug Hammemer caught Shady Fritch off first base for the final out.
Both starters battled through the first two innings with neither team scoring.
The Rams grabbed a 2-0 lead with a two-out rally in the bottom of the third inning. After Erend retired, Moser and Ferrell, a two-out hit by opposite field single by Logan Stein started the rally. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Owen Ryenolds and Parker Hancock gave Tinora the 2-0 edge after three.
The Rams lead grew to 4-0 with another two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth. Ryan Mills started the inning with a single and scored on an opposite-field hit by Jared Neff for a 3-0 advantage. Coach Singer would pull starter Arend after the Neff single and bring in Jonah Shininger.
A two-out single by Owen Ferrell would plate Neff, who was sacrificed to second by Avery Moser. Tinora led 4-0 after four innings of play.
A third straight two-run inning gave Tinora a 6-0 advantage through five. After the first two batters were retired by Jonah Shininger, Allan Burchfield would single, followed by another single by Ryan Mills to put runners at first and third.
Coach Tipton would roll the dice on a double steal, sending Mills to second on the pitch to Snyder. The Apaches threw down to second, and Mills was safe. Jetting home on the throw to second was Burchfield; his run gave the Rams a 5-0 lead. Kolton Snyder would follow with an RBI single, scoring Mills for the 6-0 advantage.
Fairview finally struck for a rally of the Tinora starter Logan Stein in the top of the sixth. A two-out single by Anthony Singer started the Apache uprising, followed by a walk to Noah Sininger. Singer would come across the plate on an RBI by Gavin Palladino. Fairview still trailed 6-1.
The Apaches saw Stein retire the first two Fairview hitters to start the top of the seventh. Elijah Arend kept the Apaches’ hopes alive with a two-out double. Logan Olinger would draw a walk vs Stein to give Fairview some hope, despite the 6-1 deficit. Despite the rally and the tension-filled air, Stein was able to get a strikeout to end the threat, ending the game with a 6-1 Tinora win.
Fairview falls to 8-3, 3-1 in the GMC. The Apaches will host Paulding on Thursday.
Tinora improves to 5-2, 1-1 in the GMC. The Rams have another big game Thursday vs Edgerton at Grube Field.
The Higbea Emprodery Player of the Game went to Tinora’s Logan Stein. What a great performance, Logan!
