KALIDA – The Ladycats Malia Romes, and Meredith Bockrath each scored 13 points, and combined for 26 of Kalida’s 37 points as the Ladycats held off the Tinora Lady Rams for a 37-29 win Tuesday.
Bockrath scored nine points in the second half, all from the line, and seven of those in the final 90 seconds to propel Kalida to the win, the Ladycats improved to 13-6.
In a great pre tournament test for both teams, the 12-5 Kalida Ladycats welcome in the 11=7 Tinora Lady Rams.
With defense at a premium in the first quarter, Kalida and Tinora battled to a 6-6 tie after the first either minutes.
The second quarter would see much of the same, great defense from both squads as Kalida took a 14-9 lead to the half.
Kalida was led in the initial half by Meredith Bockrath with just four points, while Tinora was led by Nova Okuley and her six points.
Tinora would rally in the third quarter and grab a 21-18 lead on an Addison Lee three pointer with 2:30 remaining in the third. Kalida would tie the game at 23-23 at quarter’s end on a Malia Romes rebound and score.
The final stanza saw Kalida hold the Tinora offense to just two points in the first six minutes of play.
Whitney Unverferth would give the Ladycats a 29-25 advantage at 5:30 in the fourth quarter, grabbing a 29-25 lead.
Tinora’s Eowyn Blanchard would try to will the Lady Rams back in the game, hitting a deep right wing three, cutting the 33-29 with 59 seconds on the clock. The next possession would see a Blanchard three pointer spin out. If it had fallen, the Kalida lead would have been cut to just one, 33-32.
Unfortunately, Blanchard would foul out a few seconds later, and Kalida’s Bockrath would hit her free throws, and the Ladycats would come away with a 37-29 win over Tinora.
