BLOOMDALE – For the first 31 mins Friday night, the Tinora Rams had the second seeded Elmwood Royals on the ropes, taking a 12-7 lead midway through the third quarter.

The Rams offense was looking to increase their lead as they drove the ball deep into Royals territory midway through the third quarter. Tinora faced a first and goal from the Elmwood seven-yard line. After two consecutive runs drove the ball to the Elmwood 1-yard line, then the next play seemed to change the flow of the game. A toss sweep resulted in a four yard loss on a third down. Tinora’s first teams GMC kicker Jacob Bishop and the Rams had to settle for a 23-yard field goal, Tinora led 15-7 at the 5:17 mark in the third quarter.
The Rams started the scoring in the first quarter as Grady Gustwiller broke through on a fourth down punt, blocking the punt through the Elmwood end one, giving the Rams a 2-0 lead with 6:57 remaining in the opening quarter.
Tinora would drive down on their ensuing drive, Jacob Bishop would kick it through the uprights from 24 yards out, the Rams led 5-0 with 3:46 left in the first stanza.
The only scoring for the Royals in the first half came in the second quarter at the 2:43 mark remaining as Mason Oliver broke free for a 43 yard TD run, the XP by Elmwood’s Susan gave the Royals a 7-5 lead.
The Rams hit the field running the two-minute offense, driving down the field in less than 90 seconds. The result was a Tinora TD as Dominic Graziazi hit Grady Gustwiller with a dart across the middle, Gustwiller would haul in a 13 yard TD pass, Bishop’s XP have the Rams a 12-7 lead with just under 40 seconds in the half.
Tinora’s Carter Guilliam would intercept Elmwood’s Hayden Wickard in the endzone on the final play of the half, returning it across midfield as time expired. Guillium was hit late, resulting in a personal foul on the Royals, however the officials ruled the hit took place after the whistle, thus adding the penalty to start the third quarter instead of a Bishop FG attempt for Tinora. The Rams would take a 12-7 lead to the locker room.
After the Rams had to settle for the above-mentioned Bishop field goal midway through the third, it was all Royal blue at Elmwood High School.
The Royals would show over the next six minutes why they came into the game averaging nearly 500 yards of offense and 43 points per game.
Elmwood, trailing 15-7 after the defensive stand at the 5:17 mark in the third, drove all the way down the field resulting in Wickard hitting Cannon Endicott for a nine yard TD pass, the two point conversion would fail, Elmwood would never look back, The rams however still led 15-13 lead at the 2:42 mark in the third quarter.
The Rams would turn the ball over three times in the next 10 minutes. After the first Royal interception of a Graziani pass, they would drive 45 yards in less than two minutes, this time the Royals QB Hayden Wickard would take it in from eight yards out, the two point conversion pass to Endicott was good, Elmwood would lead 21-15 with 13 seconds left in the third quarter.
The key play on the drive was Elmwood converting a fourth and twelve from the Tinora 30 yards line with just under 60 seconds in the quarter remaining.
Now trailing for the first time since the first quarter, Tinora started the fourth quarter by going three and out.
The Royals Alex Arnold would dart 39 yards for a TD with 8:44 remaining in the game, the two point conversion would fail. The Royals would lead the Rams 27-15.
Following another Rams interception, Elmwood would cap off the scoring for the night with another Arnold score, this one from 11 yards out. The XP by Susan gave Elmwood a 34-15 lead.
The ensuing drive would result in the third interception of the second half. The Elmwood Royals run out the final 5:11, advancing to the OHSAA third round.
Elwood moves to 12-1 with the win. The Royals will take on Eastwood. The two teams previously met early in this season on 9/30 as Eastwood defeated Elmwood 49-49. The Royals will be looking for revenge this coming Friday.
