SHERWOOD – Tinora and Fairview headed into their annual contest in what seems to be the game of the year each season on the GMC volleyball schedule.
A packed gym at Fairview High School saw the undefeated Lady Rams of Tinora, losers of just one set all season, put their undefeated 8-0 record on the line against the 6-2 Apaches. Both teams started their GMC slate last week with wins.
An epic opening set saw the Apaches, a point away several times from grabbing a 1-0 lead in front of the home crowd, saw the visiting Lady Rams rally and take set one 28-26.
Set two saw Tinora jump out to a 3-0 lead, but Fairview rallied and led the rest of the way, handing Tinora just their second set defeat of the season, a 25-21. The match was knotted at 1-1
Set three would see the Lady Rams jump out to another lead, this time 8-2. Tinora would hold the lead through the set, not allowing the Apaches to get closer than four points. The Lady Rams would grab a 2-1 set lead.
Tinora again would jump out to an early lead in set four, Fairview would rally and take a 15-14 lead midway through. The Lady Rams would increase their lead to 24-20, only to see the host Apaches rally to get within 24-23. Tinora would have a thrilling final point, getting the final point, and the set 25-23 to take the match over Fairview 3-1.
The Lady Rams remain undefeated at 9-0, 20- in the GMC. Tinora will host Evergreen on Thursday night.
Fairview drops to 6-3, 1-1 in the GMC. The Apaches will hit the road and face two straight non-conference opponents on the road, Swanton on Thursday and Otsego Saturday.
