The Cardiac Kids, the Tinora Rams 2024 football, found themselves in another thriller as the opening round of the OHSAA playoffs kicked off Friday night as the Rams hosted the Carey Blue Devils.

Trailing Carey 21-17 with just seven seconds on the clock, Tinora needed a touchdown to win and advance. Unfortunately, their magical season came to a close as the Rams saw their magical season end as an Owen Ferrell pass fell incomplete in the endzone as time expired.

After the visiting Blue Devils were stopped on fourth down with just under 60 seconds on the game clock as Carey rolled the dice and went for a fourth and 15 from the Tinora 43-yard line. The Rams defense came up with a stop as the Tinora offense took over with zero timeouts, needing to drive 57 yards for a game-winning score.

Sophomore Tinora quarterback Owen Ferrell drove the Rams offense to the Carey 20 with seven seconds on the clock, before his final throw fell to the grass incomplete as the Rams dropped a heartbreaker to the Blue Devils, 21-17.

Carey struck first and early, scoring on their opening possession as quarterback Kyler Boes hit Tripp Phoenix down the right sideline for a 60 yard score with 10:34 on the first quarter clock. Nathan Gary added the XP for a 7-0 Blue Devils lead.

Tinora would answer as Owen Ferrell would connect with Josh Lieb on a 21 yard strike. Lieb went over the Carey defender for the circus catch. Jacob Bishop’s XP tied the game at 7-7 with 5:51 on the first quarter clock.

Carey would counter as running back Mace Puckett would race 42 yards for another first quarter Carey score, Gary’s XP would put the Blue Devils on top, 14-7 with 1:46 in the first stanza.

Tinora took the punch and responded with 9:50 in the second quarter as Cooper Replogle smashed it in from six yards out, the Bishop XP tied the game at 14-14.

Tinora would take the lead on the final play of the half as senior All GMC kicker Jacob Bishop would nail a 38 yard field goal. Bishop, despite a leg injury, was able to step up and send the Rams into the locker room with a 17-14 halftime advantage.

Carey had a huge advantage in yards at the half, 125 yards to 214 yards.

The only scoring in the second half came at the end of the third quarter with .39 second on the clock as bruising Carey running back Eli Steen would hit paydirt as he would score from four yards out, the Gary XP would give Carey the lead the would never give up.

Carey would outgain Tinora 376-196 in the win.

Carey improves to 6-5 and will travel to Patrick Henry next Friday to take on the Patriots.

Tinora sees their season end at 7-4 and a GMC Championship.
