Tinora 42 Fairview 34

JEWELL – As the Tinora Rams exited the locker room prior to the final pregame warm-ups, a bit of the past history also entered the floor with the Rams as they looked to take on the Fairview Apaches.

The Apaches defeated the Rams two separate times last season, one in the regular season, and one that ended the season for the Rams in the OHSAA Districts.

Rams basketball coach and Tinora alum Kris Lymanstall surprised the team as players came out sporting new throwback uniforms, honoring the Rams teams from the 70’s and 80’s.

Tinora greats from the likes of Tim Aschemeier, Ty Gullium, and the father of current Rams player Luke Harris, Jim Harris donned these colors decades ago in the old Alan Moore Gymnasium.

A packed house at the new Tinora gymnasium saw the Rams come out and play a great initial quarter. For the second straight game, senior Luke Harris caught fire in the opening quarter, bucketing eight points as Tinora grabbed a 14-9 lead over the visiting Apaches.

At times, the second quarter became a bit of a sloppy mess for both teams, Tinora would grab a 21-13 lead with five minutes left in the half. The Apaches, coming in losing six straight, caught a bit of a hot streak, cutting the Rams lead down to 21-17 at the half. The Rams would commit five second quarter turnovers, after zero in the initial quarter.

Harris led the Rams at the half with eight points, Fairview playing as many as 11 players were led by Eli Shininger’s six points.

The third quarter would see the Apaches come out with their best play, grabbing the lead over the Rams midway through the third quarter. 22-21 on a three pointer by Brody Retcher. Kale Salyers would nail another three pointer for Fairview, they would lead Tinora 25-22 midway through the third stanza.

Tinora would grab the lead for good near the end of the third quarter on a three point bucket by Tinora’s Cole Anders. Cole’s father Steve also wore the throwback uniform in the mid 80’s. The Anders three gave the Rams a 31-29 lead with just over 90 seconds in the third.

The Rams would exit the quarter with the 31-29 lead.

The fourth quarter would see the Rams defense step up, limiting the Apaches to five points over the final eight minutes. Luke Harris would end up with 13 points, the Apaches limited Harris to just five points over the final three quarters.

Tinora’s Adam Spychela would nail a huge three early in the final quarter, giving the Rams a 35-29 lead, a lead they would take to the final buzzer, defeating the Fairview Apaches, 42-34.

Despite being limited to just three points, Rams senior leader Gaven Eckert would grab 15 rebounds in the Tinora win.
