JEWELL – After the first 16 minutes, the Tinora Lady Rams were locked in a defensive struggle with the undefeated Liberty Center Tigers. Then, the final 16 minutes came.
The Tigers of Liberty Center traveled over to Tinora to take on the Lady Rams in a rare Saturday afternoon matinée from Tinora High School. Liberty Center came in with a 5-0 record, averaging 57 PPG, stealing the ball at the rate of 22 times a game. Even more impressive was the 26 PPG allowed by the tenacious Tigers defense.
After a promising first quarter, both teams looked to take the momentum into the second quarter. The Tigers led 11-9 after the initial quarter.
The second quarter started, and came to a slow pace and would last an eternity. Both teams seemed to be running on three flats as they struggled to get anything going in the quarter. Defenses excelled in the eight-minute quarter, Liberty Center limited the Lady Rams to just one basket, while the Tigers scored just two buckets themselves.
Teams headed to the locker room, with Liberty Center leading the Lady Rams 15-11.
Rams leading scored Liv Mueller would not score in the opening half, while the Tigers were led by Bea Barrett’s nine points.
Unsure what Lady Tigers head coach Tim Davis said during his 8 minutes halftime speech, but it seemed to contain some magical words, as his squad came out like the 5-0 team that made the 30-minute trip over from Henry County.
The Lady Tigers exploded for 8 points in the first 2 minutes, doubling what they scored in the second quarter.
Liberty Center would go on to score 16 third quarter points, limiting the Lady Rams to just six. The Lady Tigers exploded for a 31-17 lead after three.
Coach Davis still had some magic in his words as the Lady Tigers scored 24 fourth quarter points on the way to their sixth win, closing out the Rams 55-25.
Liberty Center would outscore Tinora 40-14 in the second half as junior Emerson Gray would light up the Lady Rams with 12 second half points on her way to a game high 19.
The Lady Tigers defense would allow just a single made free throw to Lady Rams leading scorer Mueller, Liv tallied just one point in the game.
With the loss, Tinora falls to 3-4. Tinora will travel to Patrick Henry on Tuesday, 12/13.
Liberty Center stays perfect, 6-0. The Tigers will travel to Springfield on 12/13.
A great job by Tinora AD Craig Rutter and PA Announcer Gene Sugg who, due to technical issues, sang the National Anthem for everyone at THS.
