The Tinora Rams and the Hilltop Cadets hit the field at Tinora High School in a non-league contest, with the sun shining bright and the temperature reading a balmy 39 degrees.
The Rams were coming in at 1-0, courtesy of a fantastic season opening performance on the hill by Casen Wolfrum.
Rams head coach Brent Renollet, 406 career wins, sent freshman Alec Schaublin to the mound, Schaublin was making his first start at the varsity level.
The freshman right-hander showed no signs of be intimidated, setting down the first 6 Cadet hitters he faced.
The Tinora Ram bats wasted little time, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after one inning of play.
Tinora’s leadoff hitter Nolan Schafer got things rolling with a single. Schafer stole second, and scored on a Cole Commisso RBI single. Tinora’s Commisso scored on a throwing error, giving the Rams a 2-0 lead. Alex Schaublin would add an RBI single on an infield single, giving Tinora a 3-0 lead after one inning.
Rams starter Alec Schaublin ran into a bit of trouble in the top of the third, allowing back to back walks to start the inning before a Cadet runner was picked off second base, a turning point in the contest.
Schaublin would retire the next batter via strikeout before walking the next two batters, loading the bases with Cadets with two outs. Hilltop catcher Devin Dempsey sent a one hop liner back to the mound, Schaublin fielded and threw to first base, Tinora first baseball Bryce Bailey with a great scoop for the third out, thwarting the Hilltop rally.
The Rams attack would add a single run in the third off Cadet starter Ian Hoffman. Hoffman would pitch well in his 3 1/3 innings, the Cadet defense would let Hoffman down on several occasions.
The Rams Casen Wolfrum would relieve Schaublin in the fourth, pitching a scoreless inning.
Tinora’s Schaublin would not allow a run in picking up his first win of the season.
Tinora would add nine runs in the fourth inning, breaking open a 4-0 game. The Rams of Tinora would send 13 men to the plate in the inning. Tinora would smash six hits in the nine run inning, highlighted by a rocket triple by sophomore Grady Gustwiller, scoring two Rams. KP Delarber would score the final Tinora run on an RBI single by TY Wiemken.
Hilltop would score their lone run off the third Rams pitcher, Tristan Birks, an unearned run, in the top of the fifth. Ian Hoffman scored from second on a Tinora throwing error. Birks struck out two Cadets in his lone inning of work, closing out the Cadets in the Tinora 13-1 victory.
The Higbea Embroidery Player of the Game went to Rams senior catcher Nolan Schafer. Schafer a roadrunner on the base paths while also handling the Rams pitching staff in the win.
Tinora improves to 2-1 and will travel to Elmwood on Monday, 5 pm start.
Hilltop falls to 0-2 and will host Archbold Monday.
The Rams also sported sparkling brand-new gray uniforms for the first time in recent years, designed by BSN Sports Jim Gares.
