It was Amanda Meyer day Saturday afternoon from Tinora High School. On a day set aside to honor seniors, the Tinora Rams lone senior was honored in a pregame ceremony.
A rare Saturday matinée game between the Tinora Lady Rams and the now BBC member Holgate Tigers tipped off at 1:20 pm. Through the first three quarters, it seemed as if the Lady Rams slept through their morning alarms.
The Lady Rams were looking to erase the disappointment of Thursday’s GMC loss to the hands of the Hicksville Lady Aces as they saddled up vs the Tigers of Holgate in a now non-conference battle.
Holgate a longtime member of the Green Meadows Conference, left the GMC at the end of the 2021 school year, and is now a member of the BBC, the Buckeye Boarder Conference.
Despite their 5-11 record, the Lady Tigers gave the 10-5 Lady Rams everything and more through the first three quarters. Tinora led after the first quarter 10-9, and took a 19-17 lead to the half.
Holgate’s Justine Eis tallied 10 first half points, Tinora’s Nova Okuley and Anna Gray with six each paced the first half scoring.
The third quarter came and went with the Lady Rams notching just a single point, an Addison Lee made free throw. Holgate led the Lady Rams after the buzzer sounded, ending the third period, 24-20.
Tinora entered the game averaging 50 points per contest, as they entered the final quarter, the Lady Rams had 20 points on the scoreboard and things were looking gloomy.
Lexa Schuller of Holgate started the fourth quarter with a bucket, increasing the Lady Tigers lead to 26-20 over Tinora.
Tinora junior Liv Mueller, held scoreless by the Holgate D through the first three quarters, finally hit the scorebook with two free throws at the 6:45 mark, cutting the lead to 26-22.
Senior honoree Amanda Meyer buried a three from the left corner, cutting the Holgate lead even more, 26-25. The Lady Rams were off and running, so it seemed.
Two free throws by Tinora freshman Nova Okuley brought the Lady Rams even at 27 with just under six minutes remaining in the contest.
An Eis free throw and an Altman bucket, and free throw put Holgate back on top, 31-27, with just five minutes remaining. The Lady Tigers lead would grow to as many as five.
Lady Rams Nova Okuley hit a three pointer from the top, cutting the Holgate lead to 32-30 with three minutes on the clock.
Lady Rams Liv Mueller hit a left corner three, giving Tinora a 33-32 lead with 2:30 remaining. This started Mueller’s barrage of points. Great defense by the Lady Rams forced a Holgate turnover and a Mueller free throw increased the Rams lead to 34-32.
Mueller hit another three, giving Tinora a 39-33 lead. Liv would end her afternoon with 11 points, all in the final quarter.
The Lady Rams would spend the next 90 seconds at the line, closing a fourth quarter where they scored 26 points, outscoring the Lady Tigers 26-13 to cap off a come from behind win.
The Tinora defense limited Holgate’s Eis to just two second half points, both single free throws.
Tinora improved to 11-5. The Lady Rams will travel to Montpelier in a non-conference game before returning to Tinora for a huge GMC game vs Paulding on Thursday.
Holgate falls to 5-12, the Lady Tigers will travel to Stryker on 1/27.
The Higbea Embroidery Player of the Game was split, Senior Amanda Meyer on Senior day as well as Liv Mueller for her 11 points in the 4th quarter. Congratulations ladies.
