Hicksville 42 Tinora 37

HICKSVILLE – When you are hot, you are hot, when you’re not, you’re not, as the Tinora Lady Rams found out in a key GMC showdown at The Red Zone at Hicksville High School on a cold Thursday night, in more than one way.

The Tinora Lady Rams entered their Thursday night battle vs. the Hicksville Lady Aces with a 10-4 overall record, and an undefeated Green Meadows Conference mark at 3-0.
The Lady Rams came in off a week long break, defeating Ayersville last Thursday in the River Rivalry.

Hicksville entered with a 10-5 mark, coming off a disappointing conference loss against Paulding last week, falling to 1-2 in conference play.

Things for Tinora got off to a great start. The Lady Rams defense held All GMC selection Kenzie Schroeder to just a single point after the initial quarter. Meanwhile, Tinora freshman sharpshooter Nova Okuley poured in 8 first quarter points as the Lady Rams grabbed a 15-7 lead after one.

The second quarter saw the Lady Rams extended their lead to as many as 11 after a Nova Okuley right wing three pointer gave Tinora a 22-11 lead with just over six minutes to go in the half.

Unfortunately for Tinora, it seems after the Okuley three, everything went south. Hicksville’s Schroeder heated up, and the Lady Rams outside shooting went ice-cold. Schroeder bucketed 11 points in the second quarter, 12 for the half.

Hicksville cut the Tinora lead to 22-20 with just over 60 seconds remaining in the half. Tinora answered with five quick points, heading to the locker room with a 27-20 lead. Nova Okuley led the Lady Rams with 11 first half points. A banged up Liv Mueller notched eight for Tinora in the half.

Hicksville chipped away at the Tinora lead throughout the third period, finally grabbing a 31-30 lead with 1:16 on the clock after an Ace’s Hayden Neinhardt free throw. The teams exited the third period tied at 33-33.

As teams settled in for the final 8 minutes in this GMC contest, Tinora looked to capture a bit of the first half magic that led to their 11 point lead. Unfortunately for the Lady Rams, that magic never resurfaced, nor did the lead, or many buckets. The Aces held the Lady Rams to just six third quarter points.

Hicksville grabbed the lead for good on a Molly Crall bucket, giving the Lady Aces a 35-33 lead with just over seven minutes in the final quarter.
Hicksville saw their lead grow to as many as six, 39-33 after a Schroeder hoop with 4:30 remaining.

Turnovers, and a what seemed to be a hoop with a lid, would haunt the Lady Rams the remainder of the contest. Tinora finished 6-32 from three point territory, their worst shooting performance of the season since a 2-20 output at Liberty Center.

Tinora’s Nova Okuley tried to keep the Lady Rams afloat, scoring all four of Tinora points in the final stanza, her last bucket cut the Aces lead to 42-37 with 3:50 remaining. This was the last bucket for either team, both teams could not buy a point the remainder of the game.
Unofficially, Tinora was 2-17 in the final quarter.

Hicksville came away with the 42-37 win, improving to 11-5 on the season, 2-2 in GMC play.

The loss dropped the Lady Rams to 10-5, 3-1 in GMC play. Tinora will host Holgate in a non-conference Matinée on Saturday from Tinora. JV tips at 12 pm.
