Lady Rams rally, take 2021 GMC Championship in five sets, 3-2

As the late great Jimmy V said, “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.”

Throughout life, you’re told over and over again, no matter what the situation is, never ever give up. No matter what, just never give up.

Nothing can be more true for the 2021 Green Meadows Conference Champions, the Tinora Lady Rams volleyball team.

With a packed gym, a jammed student section, and the Tinora pep band rocking the house, the Fairview Lady Apaches and Tinora Lady Rams were set to battle for the 2021 GMC Championship yet again, this time at Tinora High School.

Both teams were running on hot water, Fairview brought a 16-5 overall record, while Tinora brought a 16-4 record. Both were 6-0 in conference play. The Lady Apaches came in winning 11 of 12 matches, while the Lady Rams of Tinora had won 11 of 12.

Things started out a bit rough for Tinora, dropping a very tough first set, 25-18.

The second set was a battle as well, the Lady Rams rallied after trailing most of the set, tying the set at 24-24. Fairview captured the next two pints, taking the second set, 26-24, taking a 2-0 advantage.

Whatever the Lady Rams players, staff, and head coach Bretta Hagerty discussed between the second and third sets will remain unknown to only those involved.
But, whatever the recipe was, it most surely should be patented. Also between sets, someone took Makenna Reetz’s jersey and replaced it with a Superman cape.

The Lady Rams came out in the third set like a house afire, taking set three, 25-10. The Apaches of Fairview didn’t know what just hit them. However, Fairview still lead 2-1 as teams headed into set four.

The fourth set was a battle, the Lady Rams fighting for their lives, jumped out to a big lead only to see Fairview mount a comeback. Tinora wouldn’t settle for anything but a win tonight. Cutting the Rams lead to 23-21, Tinora took the next two points. Quinn Horn slamming the door, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

As both teams took three minutes to settle in for the final stanza, and the 2021 title, the Rams would look defeat in the face and turn her away yet again. The first to 15 would win the set and the match.

In a back and back and forth epic set, the Tinora Rams just would not let go of the rope. Jumping out to an early lead, only to see Fairview tie the fifth set at 6-6. As Fairview took a 9-6 lead midway in the fifth, The Lady Rams again rallied to tie the set at 11-11. Emma Chafins tied it at 12-12 with a hammer in the back left corner. Makenna Reetz kill gave the Rams a 13-12 advantage. The Lady Rams rode Superman’s cape & the rollercoaster ride for the next two points, capturing the set and the match 15-12, giving the Lady Rams the 2021 Green Meadows Conference title on the Reetz spike.

As the Lady’s rushed to celebrate at the net, the Tinora student section spilled on the court, congratulating the Lady Rams on the victory.

It seemed no one wanted to leave, fans, students, parents, just soaking in the moments 20+ minutes after the game had ended. Tears were shed, hugs all-around, tons of pics were taken, it was an instant classic!

The Higbea Embroidery Player of the Game award goes to Makenna Reetz. Congratulations Makenna!

Make no mistake about it, this was a true team win, if someone was down, a teammate picked the other up. From Reetz, to Horn, to Reineke, to McQuillin, to the water girls, this was an epic comeback team win for the Lady Rams

In the final JV contest of the season, the Rams defeated the Apaches 25-21 & 25-7, winning 2-0. A great season for the JV team.
