Lady Rams win in a walk-off 4-3

Things were looking very bleak for the Tinora Lady Rams late in the sectional opener vs the Genoa Lady Comets.

Not only was the Lady Rams trailing at home 1-0 as they headed to the bottom of the sixth inning, but they also were without freshman sensation starting pitcher Scylea Zolman in the final 3 innings.

The Genoa Lady Comets took a 1-0 to the top of the fifth inning. After one out in the fifth, lead-off hitter and starting pitcher, Kaylin Shields lined a smash off the knee of the Lady Rams starter Zolman.

Zoleman had to exit the game after four and one-third innings, allowing 3 hits while striking out nine Lady Comets. Head Coach Denny Helberg called upon senior leader Tristen Norden to step in at the drop of a hat. Norden had pitched just two innings this season before getting thrown into the fire.

The Tinora Lady Rams senior right-hander responded, getting her teammates to the bottom of the sixth inning with Genoa still holding a tight 1-0 lead.

The Lady Rams starting shortstop turned emergency relief pitcher Norden stepped to the plate, already 2 for 2 at the dish, Norden lined a single to start the Tinora rally. After a ground out, DeVonna Holmes stepped up into the pressure cooker with two outs. With Norden on second, Holmes lined a double to the wall, scoring Tristan Norden trying the game at 1-1.

The Lady Comets defense let them down over the next few batters. After Quinn Horn reached on an errant throw, Sara Neff, who came in for Zoleman in the batting order, blooped a single into right field scoring Holmes, giving the Rams a 2-1 lead. Libby Bumb reached on another Genoa throwing error, scoring Neff giving Tinora a 3-1 lead as we headed to the seventh inning.

With one out, the Genoa Lady Comets started a rally. After a single by Megan Valentine, Norden got a strikeout for out number two. Down to their last out, another single by Lady Comets leadoff hitter Kaylin Shields gave Genoa hope. In stepped Caitlin Cruickshank, Cruickshank sent an opposite-field liner down the right-field line, diving was Sara Neff who just missed a great catch. Scoring was Valentine and Shields to tie the game at 3-3. Tristen Norden got a ground ball to shortstop Teegan Norden to end the inning, stranding the runner at third.

Logan McQuillin led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk. Into the oven again stepped senior Tristen Norden. Already 3-3 with 3 singles, Norden sent a liner off the diving second baseman’s glove that trickled into shallow right field. Off with the crack of the bat was McQuillin from first, as the ball was rolling into the right field grass, the sophomore had a head of steam as she rounded second and headed for third. As Genoa retrieved the ball, the throw to third was errant and headed for the fence on the third-base side. McQuillin popped up after sliding into third base, headed for home without a throw, scoring the winning run for the Lady Rams.
