Tinora captures GMC title

Heading into the baseball edition of the River Rivalry vs the Ayersville Pilots, the Rams of Tinora had a chance to clinch their fourth straight GMC baseball title with a win.

With the Pilots moving into the top 20 on the latest coaches poll, head coach Alan Maag brought his Div IV #17 Pilots and their 12-6 overall record, 3-1 in the GMC, over to Tinora to take on the #13 Div III ranked Rams, 17-3 overall and 5-0 in the Green Meadows Conference, for a chance to get back in the conference race.

Both coach Maag and Renollet sent their aces to the hill. Tinora sent senior Andrew Imthurn to the mound to face Pilot ace, lefty Cade Craft. Imthurn was coming in with a 6-0 record and a 1.81 ERA while Craft was coming in at 5-0 with a .048 ERA on the season.

Both teams loaded the bases in their half of the first, only the Rams came away with damage, Tinora scored on a Nolan Schafer run to put the Rams on top 1-0 through the first three innings.

Tinora added another run with an RBI single by Max Grube in the bottom of the fourth, increasing the Rams lead 2-0.

Starter Andrew Imthurn shut down the Ayersville bats through the first 4 innings, allowing 5 hits while striking out eight Pilot hitters.

Taking a 2-0 lead to the bottom of the fifth, the Tinora offense sent 10 batters to the plate, scoring five runs on four hits off Craft. The big blow was a Christian Commisso bases-clearing double to increase the Tinora lead to 5-0. The Rams added two additional runs in the fifth to grab a 7-0 lead as the teams headed to the sixth inning.

|As Tinora’s Imthurn was cruising along, the Pilot bats were awoken. Ayersville sent nine batters to the plate, scoring 5 runs off the Tinora starter. Aided by three hit batters along with four hits, the Pilots mounted a rally with five runs, cutting the Rams lead to 7-5.
Head Coach Brent Renollet headed to the hill to make a change, bringing in Rams righty Jayden Bergman with a runner on second base and two outs. Bergman got the Rams out of the jam and out of the inning with the Rams leading by two runs.

The junior Bergman stayed on as the Pilots sent the middle of the order to the plate in the top of the seventh. Bergman sent the Pilots down in order, striking out two batters to secure the save and the Rams win, including the 2021 GMC championship.

Andrew Imthurn captured the win, moving to 7-0 on the season.

Tinora improves to 18-3, 6-0 in the GMC.
Ayersville falls to 12-7, 3-2 in the GMC.

The Rams host Patrick Henry on Saturday morning at 11 am.
